We hope to see you this Thursday, November 15th from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Oyster for our parent forum on the topic: Dispelling the Myth about Bilingual Education. This panel discussion is designed to provide parents with the most recent research and information about the importance of learning in a dual language setting. It is the first of a series of parent discussions on issues related to dual language instruction. This event is being hosted by Sandra Gonzalez and Marta Guzman and will be held in the auditorium at the Oyster campus (note location change.)
Testing dates for DCBAS (a baseline assessment test for reading and math) for 3rd through 6th graders are Wednesday November 14th and Thursday, November 15th. Oyster/Adams teachers will use the results of this test to plan for your child's classroom instruction, so it is very important that your child be in school on these days, well-rested and well-fed. The testing periods will be 40 to 50 minutes in length.
Sr. Jose Bustios, 4th grade teacher, recently had surgery. We are happy to report that he is doing well and wish him a speedy recovery. We currently have a Spanish speaking substitute and have communicated that to all the parents in the class. Mr. Dixon sent out information about how he and the substitute were addressing the instruction to have a balance between Spanish and English.

Up-dates on Adams campus facilities issues. - During recent rain, we experienced leaks in 6 areas of the building. DCPS sent out a crew to patch areas believed to be the sources of the leaks and we are waiting for rain to see if the patching had its intended effect. - There have been concerns raised about the smell emanating from the radiators at Adams. This is due to the recent paint that was applied to the radiators. The paint has to be "baked" in order to correct the problem. DCPS is being expedient about correcting the problem - this will be done this week-end! - The floor in the cafeteria is being worked on to level the floor so that they can install tile - this will happen this week-end!
Our first joint OCC Board/LSRT update is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7, at Oyster, from 6-8 p.m. The update will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Come with your questions and concerns. Come learn what is happening at your school. Attendance is required. Translators will be provided.
Volunteers Needed at Oyster! We need parents who could be available on Nov. 21, Dec. 5th & 19th, Jan. 16th, Feb. 13th between 9-11 a.m. to give tours of the Oyster building to prospective parents. No special training or specialized knowledge of Oyster is required...just enthusiasm for the program! We only need one parent per date to guide the tours, so you don't have to be available for every one. We also need parents who can be available mornings to guide tours with just a couple of days advance notice for those prospective parents who are visiting the area and want to schedule a tour during their visit. Una biblioteca para Juana

This book tells us about the early years in the life of one the first Spanish-language poets in the Americas, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (Sor is another name for a sister or nun). Juana, whose full name was Juana Ramírez de Asbaje, was born in the mid XVII century, in colonial Mexico. She was a precocious child who showed an insatiable thirst for knowledge and curiosity about everything. She had learned to read by the age of three!
She enjoyed her grandfather's personal library. The more she read, the more she wanted to learn. She loved books. And so it happened that she learned from her school teacher that the university in Mexico had a library with thousands of books. She decided then she wanted to study at the university. Back in those times, only men were allowed to study in universities. But Juana would not let this unfair century-old tradition deter her from pursuing her dreams. Through determination, hard work, and the support of her family, she managed to become a scholar and a renowned writer whose work survived the test of time and stayed relevant more than 300 hundred years later.

Esperamos verles el jueves 15 de noviembre de 5 a 7 p.m. en el plantel de Oyster para nuestra reunión acerca del tema: "DESVELANDO EL MITO DE LA ENSEñANZA BILINGÜE" Este debate tiene por objeto informar a los padres de los estudios mas recientes acerca de la importancia del aprendizaje en dos idiomas. Será el primero de una serie de debates relacionados con la enseñanza bilingüe y está patrocinado por Sandra González y Marta Guzmán.
Los exámenes DCBAS (evaluación básica de lectura y matemáticas) para los grados 3? a 6? serán el miércoles 14 y el jueves 15 de noviembre. Los profesores tendrán en cuenta el resultado de esos exámenes para organizar la clase de su hijo. Por ello es muy importante que su hijo asista a clase esos días descansado y preparado para los exámenes. La duración de los mismos será entre 40 y 50 minutos.
El Sr. Jose Bustios, profesor de 4? grado, ha sido operado recientemente. Nos es grato anunciar que todo ha salido bien y deseamos que tenga una buena y pronta recuperación. Tenemos un sustituto de español y ya lo hemos comunicado a los padres de 4?A. El Sr. Dixon envió información a estos padres de los planes que seguirán él y el sustituto para mantener el balance entre español e inglés.

Noticias de Última hora del plantel de Adams:
Después de las recientes lluvias, hemos tenido algunas goteras en seis diferentes zonas del edificio. DCPS ha enviado reparar las áreas afectadas y esperamos que hayan surtido efecto. Hemos tenido algunas preocupaciones por el olor de la pintura utilizada en los radiadores. Parece ser que han utilizado una pintura inadecuada que al calentarse despedía un olor bastante fuerte. Estamos trabajando para solucionar este problema y esperamos quede resuelto este fin de semana. El suelo de la cafetería ha sufrido desperfectos que confiamos que sean reparados este fin de semana.
Nuestra primera reunión del Consejo de OCC/LSRT esta prevista para el miércoles 7 de diciembre en Oyster de 6-8 p.m. Después de la puesta al d?a en las últimas noticias se abr?a una sesión de preguntas y respuestas. Asista para resolver sus dudas y preocupaciones. Podrá enterarse de lo que ocurre en la escuela de su hijo. Rogamos que asista y recuerde que habrá traductores.
?Necesitamos voluntarios en Oyster! Necesitamos padres que estén disponibles los días 21 de noviembre, 5 y 19 de Diciembre. 16 de enero, y 13 de febrero entre las 9 y las 11 de la mañana para ofrecer una visita guiada a padres interesados en Oyster. No hace falta ningún entrenamiento o conocimientos especiales, solo tener entusiasmo por nuestro programa! Una biblioteca para Juana

Este libro nos cuenta sobre los primeros años en la vida de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, una de las primeras poetas en lengua castellana (el título Sor es equivalente al de hermana o monja). Juana, cuyo nombre completo era Juana Ramírez de Asbaje, nació a mediados del siglo XVII en el Virreinato de México. Desde una muy temprana edad Juana exhibió una gran precocidad y curiosidad intelectual. ?A los tres años de edad ya sabía leer!
A Juana le encantaba curiosear y pasar el tiempo en la biblioteca de su abuelo. Mientras más leía mayor era su deseo de aprender. Amaba los libros. Un día, su maestra le comentó que la universidad en México tenía una biblioteca con miles de libros. Decidió entonces que quería estudiar en la universidad. Pero en esa época solamente los hombres podían estudiar en la universidad. Sin embargo, Juana no permitió que esta injusta tradición centenaria troncara sus sueños. Gracias a su perseverancia, dedicación y al apoyo de su familia, llegó a ser una reconocida intelectual y escritora cuya obra ha sobrevivido el implacable paso del tiempo y mantenido su vigencia luego de 300 años.
