Hurrah, hurrah! The furniture that was ordered for the Adams campus arrives on Monday, October 15th at 8 a.m. We would really appreciate (and absolutely need) parent volunteers to help throughout the day, especially in the morning. Please contact your room parent if you are available to assist us any time during the day from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

The Festival of Building Arts at the National Building Museum will be celebrated tomorrow, Saturday, October 13th from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. Mrs. Whelan will be there from 11 to 1 to spend the day with Oyster/Adams families. Come play, create and experiment with construction materials of all kinds!

It is with great pleasure we announce that we now have a music teacher for children in grades pre-k to 4th grade (5th through 7th graders receive music via a contract with Fillmore). We are able to hire this teacher because of your donations to the OCC (Oyster Community Council). Thank you for all of your support. Sylvia Zwi is a Brazilian native and has been teaching for over twenty years. She collaborates with numerous local arts organizations, mostly in the capacity of teaching artist in the areas of drama, movement and music. We welcome Ms. Zwi as a member of the Oyster family.

Oyster-Adams is participating in the National Geographic magazine subscription program. Each student receives their very own magazine on a weekly basis. Mr. Mel Finkelstein and his wife Elaine, the donors paying for the magazine subscriptions that the students are receiving. They will visit us on Wednesday, October 17th in the am. It won't be too long since he has to be back at Geo for a noon lunch. Mayor Fenty and Chancellor Rhee are scheduled to visit and Geo may be bringing a staff photographer. They will be visiting classrooms at both campuses.

HoopEd will begin at the Adams campus on Tuesday, October 16th. Jonathan Scribner and his team will teach students who have signed up basketball skills once a week right after school. The students at the Oyster campus whose parents have signed them up will begin on Thursday, October 18th!

The SHINE Program will begin on Monday, October 15th at the Adams campus. This program addresses issues related to human growth and development. For now, the students in 6th grade will have the opportunity to attend classes during the afternoon every Monday. We hope we will be able to add the 5th and 7th graders at a later date. Parents, if you have a 6th grader and would like to attend the overview session on Monday between the hours of 1:30 to 3:15 we invite you to do so. Students will leave the session with a permission form to take home to you for your signature. Please review the program content and return the permission slip to your child's homeroom teacher no later than Friday, October 19th.

We have had a number of playground accidents at the Adams campus and, as a result, playground safety is being addressed diligently. I have requested for a playground safety assessment and the results will be shared at the OCC Board Meeting next week to ensure that steps are taken to keep our students safe. The Oyster campus is not forgotten--I have had an assessment of the gates on the playground and am waiting for the report.

November Book of the Month - Oyster

Oyster Bilingual Elementary School Book-of-the-Month, November 2007

Los Discos de Mi Abuela by Eric Velasquez Traducido por Eida de la Vega

Los Discos de Mi Abuela tells the story of Eric, a young boy that goes to live with his grandmother every summer. During those long and hot summer days, the grandmother fills the apartment with music from Puerto Rico - bomba, plena, salsa and merengue - and shares with her grandson memories and passions. Eric travels thru time and cultures to discover how a strong the connection between two generations in a warm apartment in New York can inspire his passion for music and art.

This story touches three important themes. Family, culture and music. You can explore each of these themes.

Family Have you ever discovered something new from your grandparents? What have they taught you? Did your grandparents inspire you to learn something new about yourself?

Culture Do your grandparents have a different cultural background? Have you ever visited your grandparent country of origin? How is it different from the US?

Music When Eric visits his grandmother they listen to different types of music. Have you ever heard or danced to these types of music? If so, which one is your favorite? Why? If not, what is are your favorite types of music?

In general, did you enjoy this story? Why or why not?

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If you were the author of this story, would you write a sequel? If so, what would it be about?
